The general Area
The Dordogne is located on the western foothills of the Massif Central. The area extends from the Limousin in the north, a sparsely populated, poor region, the sunny valleys of Aquitaine in the west and the fertile valley of the Garonne in the south. The area consists of the Dordogne and Lot, on the French Revolution called Périgord and Quercy. These names are still used as a local name and you could say that the Perigord and Quercy along with the Dordogne form.
The area consists mainly of a limestone plateau that here and there reaches a thickness of several hundred meters. In many cracks, cracks and crevices can quickly drain the water. By contraction and movement of the earth beneath the limestone crust natural caves occur, causing the water flowing in the course of time impressive stalactites were formed. Thanks to the many rivers that between high cliffs cut through the area, such as the Dordogne, Lot and Cele, Isle and Vezere valleys are created with very fertile silt.
The most important economic activities and there are fields of corn, tobacco, sunflowers, strawberries and asparagus, but also brickyards and the breeding of cattle, ducks and geese. Most towns and cities are located in the valleys. The hills are covered with forests full of game. Hunting is therefore the national sport number one.
In the Périgord Noir, the eastern part around the city Sartat, it is mainly the dense, dark oak forests that the image and set the atmosphere. In the Perigord vert, the northern part around Brantome and Nontron, the lower hills, the slopes friendlier and less dense forests, which somewhat transparent landscape. Between these two areas is the Perigord Blanc, the region around Périgueux, where the soil by the calcareous substrates is slightly turned white. The Purple Perigord, a region in the west of the Dordogne around Bergerac, is so named because of the many vineyards. At the beginning of the fourth glaciation, 30,000 years BC-attracted many tribes from the east and north of Europe to the valley of the Vezere, where a considerably milder climate prevailed. The area was also ideal because of the many caves and caverns that an ideal shelter from the cold and potential enemies, while in the fertile, narrow valleys rich in wildlife lived so easy to catch that there was time lap to the weapons and improve rock drawings (Lascaux).
The Dordogne was also the scene of the Hundred Years War between England and France (1337-1453). There were many strategically located castles, fortified churches and villages built to protect the area. Many of these buildings are well preserved by the ideal climate: hot and dry in summer, mild in winter.
