Columbine, originally a prune oven barn has been renovated into a wheelchair-friendly holiday villa, all set on the ground floor and complete with a garden and a private swimming pool, near Bordeaux, Bergerac and Saint Emilion in southwest France.

Set in a tranquil country location near the border of the Dordogne in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region of southwest France.

We’re not sure exactly how old the building is, but it features in the Plan Napoleon which makes it at least 160 years old.

Colombine is well equipped and furnished and sleeps up to six people over three bedrooms – one double room and two twin rooms, although please note that one of the twin rooms can also be converted to make a large king-size bed. A baby cot, bed rails and a highchair can also be provided.
There is a bathroom with bath, wet room shower, washbasin and a WC, and a second shower room with washbasin and shower. Also a separate WC with a hand washbasin. All of the accommodation is on one level, there are no stairs to negotiate and it is wheelchair accessible.

It’s a peaceful retreat from the rigours of everyday life.
The nearest restaurant bar is at Auriac sur Dropt 2.8km (1.2 miles), 30 minutes walk along a country road.

Where possible the owners have retained the old stone walls and character of the original building, which was open on two sides, except for one room which is now the sitting room. The dining room retains the openness of the original by having two large sliding windows all along one side, giving the room a light airy feel. The horseshoe-shaped kitchen fits snugly into the old prune drying area.

For those seeking winter accommodation or a long let, the cottage is double-glazed and well-insulated with electric radiators and a wood-burning stove.

Bedrooms

Bedroom 1
Double room with double aspect windows looking out over the garden and surrounding fields.
Built-in wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and a room fan.

Twin room with double aspect windows looking out over the garden and the fields.
Wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and a room fan.

Bedroom 3
Twin room with windows looking out over the garden.
Wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and a room fan.
Two single beds, 90cm x 180cm but can easily be made into a king-size bed if you wish. Door width 79cm.

Two bathrooms and two WC, these are located next to or opposite the bedrooms:
1. Large bathroom with a full bath, basin, wet room walk-in shower area and a wc.

2. Shower room with a wet room walk-in shower and a washbasin.

There is also an additional separate wc with a hand washbasin.

Baby facilities

A travel cot and a highchair can be provided on request. Please provide your own bed linen for the cot.

Kitchen / Dining area

Open plan kitchen area and dining table with opening doors and views over the garden and the pool, there is a lovely covered outside dining table and chairs just outside the kitchen. The kitchen facilities include a Fridge freezer, oven, grill, dishwasher, microwave, kettle and filter coffee machine.
There is also a separate laundry room with a washing machine.

Lounge area

Cosy lounge with sofas in front of the old feature fireplace, DVD player, and TV with both English and French-speaking channels. Free Wi-Fi.

Outside

From the kitchen dining area, there is a covered terrace with a table and chairs looking out over the garden and pool. A sloping path takes you from the house to the pool terrace. The garden surrounds the property on three sides, the fourth is farmland. At the far end of the garden is a children’s swing. There is also an additional covered area with a table tennis table.

This is a quiet rural position, the owners neighbouring property is used occasionally but does not impact the privacy or facilities afforded by guests of Columbine, the other buildings are the old farm barns that are not used. This property and buildings are set at the end of their own road high on a hill, the nearest neighbour is quite a way across farmland.

Private heated pool

The saltwater pool measures 5m x 10m (4.9m x 9.8m) plus walk-in steps with a handrail and is protected by an alarm. Surrounded by a terrace with sun loungers and parasols.

The step depths into the water measure: 1st step is above or on the waterline, 2nd step is 20cm deep, 3rd step is 45cm deep, 4th step is 65cm deep. The shallow end is 90cm deep and the deepest part is 1.8m.

For pool opening times and when the pool is heated please refer to the ‘Price’ tab above.

Information for wheelchair users and guests who are not so mobile

Colombine is all on one level, it is a very old property, and whilst it has not specifically been designed for wheelchair access there are 3 bedrooms on the ground floor without any steps and minimal door treads. There is a level concrete path and terrace all around the villa and a sloping path from the terrace down to the pool area.

1. Large spacious bathroom with a full bath, large wet room style shower area, washbasin and WC all with wall-mounted grab rails. A shower chair with armrests (not on wheels)  is provided for guests’ use. The wash-basin height from the floor to the underneath is 71cm.

2. Shower room. The shower room door is 79cm wide, the wet room shower is 90cm wide.

Bedroom door widths are provided above along with the bedroom descriptions.

There is a gravel driveway with a concrete pathway outside the front of the house. The front door has a gentle slope up to it, the door width is 84.5cm, small door tread sill is 2cm high. It’s also possible to enter Colombine via the large sliding doors in the dining area or the double doors in the lounge.
The double door width in the lounge is 110cm, door tread sill is 3cm high.
Large sliding doors in the dining area, door tread sill 3cm high.

Note: none of the beds are electric or adjustable.

The local area and what to do, Monsegur / Duras, Bordeaux and the Dordogne, France

Duras centre is 8km away and the nearest supermarket at Duras is 7km away through country roads. The ancient town of Duras where there are bars, restaurants, banks and shops as well as a traditional weekly market every Monday morning and a bustling night market every Thursday in the height of the summer months. Allemans du Dropt (6km) has a restaurant, bar, bakers and butcher.
Many more towns and villages to explore locally.

The nearest restaurant is at Auriac sur Dropt 2.7km away or a 30-minute walk down a country lane Le Camelia Restaurant.

Bordeaux city is 83km drive to the west and Bergerac is 38km to the northeast, Saint Emilion 52km northwest.

An ideal base from which to explore southwest France. Located in the region of Aquitaine on the 3 borders of Gironde / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne and is considered to be one of the most picturesque areas of France.

The region is famous for wine and wonderful gastronomy. Whether you are in St. Emilion, Pomerol, Blaye, The Médoc, Entre Deux Mers, Bourg, Graves or Sauterne the wines of the region are without doubt some of the very best in the world! There are local producers nearby that offer excellent quality wines at very reasonable prices through to the higher end of the market.

The gently rolling countryside is a pleasure to explore, with excellent roads winding their way through fields and vineyards. Perfect walking and cycling country!

Monsegur and Duras are ancient Bastide towns set around a market square which are host to weekly markets and also a weekly night market during the peak summer season. There is a good selection of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and excellent boulangeries in both towns, our favourite being La Choco-Latine in Monsegur who were runners up in the French TV show “La Meilleure Boulangerie de France” in 2019.

We also love the volunteer-run Cinema Eden in Monsegur which shows some international films in their original language version (VOSTF) with French subtitles.

The market squares host a variety of festivals and events throughout the year including in Monsegur the famous 24 Heures de Swing at the beginning of July every year.

Wine and Gastronomy

Vineyards are abundant in the area.
The Bordeaux wine region has 21 appellations. Visit some of the many local Chateau that offers free tastings and tours while you choose a bottle or two.

Not to be missed is the world-famous Saint Emilion 52km. A designated world heritage site and is truly stunning. Explore characteristic narrow lanes lined with wine merchants, cafes, restaurants and interesting independent shops. A guided tour of the monolithic church is highly recommended.

Wine tours, a picnic in a vineyard and cheese and wine pairing evenings are available through local couple Sylvie and Pascal who run Loving Aquitaine.

Bordeaux

This designated world heritage site is a must for all visitors. This cosmopolitan city offers a diverse range of attractions. The golden triangle has a fabulous range of shops for those shopaholics.
A rich variety of architecture forms the backdrop for the street cafes, restaurants, bars and not forgetting the superb Grand Theatre.

The Dordogne is just one of the many places to visit for day trips. Anything from canoeing or boat trips on the Dordogne river at Bergerac to exploring the wonderful and pretty ancient villages.

A freshwater lake with a sandy beach at Blasimon is just 37km away and is a popular attraction to take children for a day out. The gently shelving sand provides a fun environment for splashing around and cooling off in the heat of the summer sun. Blasimon lake.

Reward yourself by feasting on fresh seafood around the Bay of Arcachon or take the ferry to Cap Ferret and feel the sand between your toes whilst you enjoy oysters and chilled white wine.

Chocolate

Yes, we believe chocolate is also an activity… we often have to visit and make sure the quality is up to standard so we can continue to recommend it.
Maison Guinguet gourmet chocolate, 9km, just outside Duras, there is a lovely shop which also sells gifts and offers guided visits to their artisan factory in July and August.

Duras Castle

The famous Chateau de Duras, 9km away, is well worth a visit and if you can muster the energy to climb to the top the stunning 360-degree vista is well worth it.

Jean-Luc B. July 2021

We’ve had a lovely, peaceful time here, swimming, playing cards, sampling some local wine, having a really nice meal at le Camelia (guinea fowl with armagnac and prunes was the highlight for me!)

Many thanks to Dave for making us so welcome.
I’m sure we will return at some point.

Au revoir Colombine.

Joel, Sally and the family. August 2018

We have all enjoyed a fabulous holiday at Colombine. A well equipped and beautiful cottage in the most picturesque of locations. It was lovely to arrive to find two bottles of wine and a box of chocolates awaiting us – a very welcome touch!!
Chris and Dave have been very kind and helpful with plenty of good advice on recommendations. The weather has been fantastic and we have thoroughly enjoyed the local night markets.
We would certainly recommend this gite to friends and we hope to visit again soon.
Many thanks

Rachel, Mike and the family. July 2018

Great week!
Recommendations:
-Tree climbing (Accrobranche) were there for 4 hours! kids loved it.
-Lac de Clarens – Aquapark Casteljaloux, Inflatables on the lake. Boulangeries in Casteljaloux on the way as not much food options at the lake.
-Lovely lunch at Cafe Lou Dropt at Allemans sur Dropt.
-Really enjoyed evening market in Duras, very busy!
-Griffin park was better than expected.
-Pizzeria in Duras was lovely – Don Camillo.

Many thanks

Rona, Craig, Rachel (12) & Fraser (10). July 2018

Lovely quiet break just what we all needed to de stress.
Thank you very much.

Michelle, Nigel, Mathew, Jake and Grandma. July 2018

My what fun they must have had building this fabulous home in the country.
The house is absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed the quiet and solitude, swimming in the pool and walking the dog along the edges of the field. The dog thought that chasing the occasional squirrel was part of the holiday package and the restaurants welcomed him in the evenings where we enjoyed some tasty local food, including wine.
We ourselves enjoyed several of our old favourite clarets plus a few very special new wines and the car is stacked to the gunnels with boxes. The first thing we will do on our return home will be to make a reservation for next year.
Many thanks to everyone involved in organising such a wonderful holiday, a superb break.

Mike and Mary. June 2018

All that we had hoped for and more!
Luxury in peaceful surroundings so much so that we only ventured a couple of miles to visit markets and restaurant Camelia which we highly recommend Sunday lunch at.

June 2018

What a wonderful week we’ve had at Colombine!
We’ve had mixed weather but the kids have loved the heated pool regardless. As we explored this area many times we felt little need to leave the house. We did have to visit Issigeac and Monpazier. If you have children with you ask in the tourist office at Issigeac for the treasure hunt. It guides you around the town explaining the old buildings and our boys loved it (aged 10 and 6). If you take the results back you even get a prize!
Although Eymet and Duras night markets were good they had a very tourist feel with lots of none food stalls. It’s definitely worth the ride to less touristy villages to experience the local night markets. Meilhan sur garonne is our favourite.
As far as the house and grounds its a big thanks to Shelley and her family for sharing their beautiful home. Also to Chris and Dave for making it spotlessly clean and caring for us.
After spending the last five summers in France and touring for 4-5 weeks each year this is truly one of the best properties we’ve stayed in.
Many thanks again and we hope one day to return.

Dominic, Carolyn and family. August 2017

This is our second visit this year to Colombine after attending a wedding earlier this year. We love the peace and tranquility and ‘home from home’ experience. Its like an escape ‘bolt hole’ from the business of life.
Chris and Dave were on hand to ensure everything was ‘just so’
We can see ourselves being regular visitors and will be back i’m sure.

Best Gite in last 10 years
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (Tripadvisor)
Excellent property with great grounds and pool situated close to Duras. Ideal for our group of four adults and two teenagers. All the bedrooms are a good size with plenty of storage space. The main living areas are light and airy with comfortable seating. The Wifi was a must for two teenage girls who NEEDED to keep in touch with England. The accommodation is incredibly well maintained (by Dave and Chris who were really helpful and friendly). The local area has multiple opportunities for visiting restaurants, chateaus and night markets. We loved every minute and will hopefully return next year.

Fantastic Gite
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (Tripadvisor)
My wife and I spent 6 wonderful weeks at the fire. I have limited mobility and the gite was perfect. All on one level with ramps where needed. 3 big bedrooms. We had our children and 2 grand children for a week and there was plenty of room. Also the pool is lovely and good hand rail to help get in and out. Finally the location was perfect for the peace and quiet we were looking for. I highly recommend this gite.

Probably the best Gite that we have ever stayed in!
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (Tripadvisor)
We stayed at Colombine for the month of April 2016. Our first impression of the Gite on arrival was of a very well cared for house. The attention to detail was very impressive and the quality of furnishings of a high standard indeed. Our stay was very peaceful, with great views over the garden and the valley below. The main purpose of our stay was to explore the area in some detail as we may move south at some point in the future. Colombine provided a perfect base for this exercise. WE would thoroughly recommend Colombine to one and all.

Jeff Lea. April 2016

A quiet, private and peaceful setting with a beautifully equipped house.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (Tripadvisor)
We are a family of 6 plus a small dog and stayed at Colombine this August. It is part of a larger estate, well set back from the road, and the owners were staying in the main house but they very much kept out of our way and vice versa and we had a really wonderful time. The house is converted from an old fruit barn and is well planned with 3 double bedrooms, 2 bath/shower rooms, and a partially open plan living space divided into kitchen, dining and sitting areas. There is a lovely terrace outside where we ate most days. The kitchen is superbly equipped and there were a lot of good details like lots of plug sockets so no arguing over who is charging their mobile (!) plus good TV and DVD player and blue tooth speaker. The pool is great and there are plenty of loungers around it. All in all it was a wonderful base from where to explore the surrounding area. We would thoroughly recommend it.

Kit A. August 2015

Great holiday – Great value.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (Tripadvisor)
We thoroughly enjoyed three weeks at Colombine. Having our 16 month old grand-daughter with us, we knew we would be spending much of our time at the accommodation so chose our place to stay with care. We were not disappointed. We have stayed in a number of lovely gites in the area over the past 20 years but cannot recall a place so well equipped and user friendly. The photographs, inviting though they are, hardly do it justice. It is spacious, clean and well designed. All the bedrooms are a good size with comfortable beds, good storage with plenty of hangers and each is equipped with a large electric fan. The generous bathroom is supplemented by a good shower room. Oodles of hot water meant no problems operating both showers at the same time. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with a new Smeg cooker, large fridge with freezer over and all the appliances one could reasonably expect. We were, perhaps, a little surprised not to be offered any change of bedding or towels during our 3 week stay but an efficient washing machine is on hand and the hot weather meant almost instant drying. The lounge is comfortable and benefits from Sky TV. The pool is not particularly large but perfectly adequate and a natural focus during our stay with temperatures often in the mid 30’s C. Upon arrival we found that the barbecue was unstable and unusable but a quick mention to Dave and it was replaced immediately with a much better Weber barbecue which we proceeded to made good use of. Having Dave on hand was a bonus. I can only think of one thing that would improve the experience and that is the provision of a parasol or two (owner has already responded positively to the suggestion) that could be positioned at the edge of the pool, as there is no shade immediately adjacent to the pool in the afternoons (a lovely vanilla tree provides ample shade in the mornings). In really hot afternoon sun one is forced to retreat to the dense shade of the terrace. Otherwise…..perfection! The local small supermarket just outside Duras is good so there is really no need to go any further. We enjoyed the privacy that the accommodation provided and the good weather meant we could make the best possible use the place and grounds. Apart from that, we had a really good steak at La Terrace opposite the chateau at Duras and the pizzas at the pizzeria in Eymet take some beating. The “Cave” next door to the pizzeria, run by an Irish lady, provides an excellent choice of recommendable wines at all prices. Tip – Tuesday evening, get to Eymet for 6.30pm grab a table under the cloisters at the pizzeria before it gets too busy and “people watch” from there as the night market gets underway. At the end of the holiday – go home and start the diet!

Had a most memorable holiday at Colombine celebrating my 50th birthday. The weather was changeable but when the sun came out it was beautiful. We particularly enjoyed Chateau de Duras and a visit to Monpazier. Our son is wheelchair dependent and we found this Gite to be most suitable…even having the bed raised for our son – very helpful. We hope to return next year.

We have rented a fair few gites in France but this one gets my vote. Quiet, peaceful, private and beautiful. We had family with us, including our baby grandson and friends from Canada joined us for the second week. We all adored the place. Our dog went missing on our second day. We were beside ourselves. Chris, who looks after the place, was brilliant…advising on useful web sites and alerting to neigbours in the local area. Thankfully Welly, the dog, eventually Found his way back. Back to the gite…. My husband and I are looking for a place to buy in France and had earmarked a proprty but, having stayed at this gite we have decided to begin our search again using Columbine as a benchmark. Pure perfection!
