The nearest shop, restaurants and boulangerie are just 3km away in Castelnaud-La-Chapelle.
Castelnaud-La-Chapelle is one of seven picturesque villages in the Perigord Noir that form the famed ‘Golden Triangle.’ It radiates charm and timeless beauty. This captivating region is often referred to as the ‘Land of 1,001 Castles.’ You’ll find yourself spoiled for choice with countless sights. There are many activities to explore.
La Prairie is set near the tranquil Dordogne and Ceou rivers. It is located in a quiet hamlet. This location is between the iconic Château de Castelnaud and Château de Lacoste. It offers the perfect base for your Dordogne adventure. Whether it’s castles, vineyards, bustling markets, prehistoric caves, or truffle hunting, the opportunities are truly endless. Canoeing, cycling and stargazing.
The Dordogne River
Close by, the majestic Dordogne and smaller Céou rivers meet in Castelnaud. It is one of France’s most beautiful villages. It is also a perfect spot for summer swimming.
Canoe rentals are available along the Dordogne, with routes tailored to your ability. You can even stop for a riverside picnic before being picked up and driven back to your starting point.
We recommend the stunning journey from Vitrac to Beynac, where you’ll pass breathtaking river landscapes, charming villages, and magnificent châteaux.
Sarlat-la-Caneda
Explore Sarlat-la-Canéda, the jewel of the Dordogne Valley and one of France’s best-preserved medieval towns. With its honey-colored stone, cobbled streets, and the highest density of UNESCO-listed buildings, Sarlat is a paradise for history lovers and photographers.
Foodies will love its famous Sarlat markets, brimming with truffles, foie gras, and local delicacies, and its lively festivals — from the Truffle Festival to the Fête de l’Oie and the Sarlat Film Festival. Year-round, Sarlat buzzes with cafés, wine bars, and gourmet restaurants.
Château des Milandes
Just 5 km from La Prairie, this elegant 15th-century château was once home to the iconic Josephine Baker. It is one of the region’s most graceful landmarks. Its stunning gardens will captivate you, while the mesmerising birds-of-prey show offers a spectacle you will never forget.
Château de Beynac
The fortress stands with an imposing silhouette. It proudly rises against the vast panorama of the Dordogne Valley. This majestic structure continues to command awe and admiration. A steadfast symbol of power through centuries of shifting tides, Beynac’s storied walls have witnessed countless chapters of history. Its timeless allure was famously captured on screen by Luc Besson in Joan of Arc (1999). This allure mirrors the eternal beauty of the surrounding landscape. Can you imagine stepping into a scene so rich in heritage? It exudes cinematic charm and is only 8 km away from La Prairie.
La Roque-Gageac
This enchanting gem is ranked as France’s third most beautiful village. It follows Mont-Saint-Michel and Rocamadour. The village lies just 9 km from La Prairie. Nestled between a limestone cliff and the tranquil Dordogne River, its narrow cobbled streets offer a unique charm. The village now boasts over 150 varieties of tropical plants. This is thanks to botanist Gérard Dorin. He began planting exotic species here in the 1960s. Dubbed the ‘Little Nice of the Perigord.’
Domme
Perched 150 meters above the Dordogne River, the fortified town of Domme offers stunning views. It is only 13 km away from La Prairie. It commands breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below. It is truly a sight not to be missed. Recognised as one of France’s most beautiful villages, its charm extends far beyond its vistas. The caves (grottes) were once a refuge for the townspeople during the Hundred Years’ War, adding to Domme’s historical intrigue.
The Marquessac Gardens
These exquisite gardens are known as the ‘Belvedere of the Dordogne.’ They are the most visited in Southwest France—and for a good reason. Wander through a labyrinth of 150,000 meticulously hand-pruned boxwoods, rockeries, and elegant peacocks. The breath-taking clifftop viewpoint, awarded three stars in the Michelin Vert Guide, promises unforgettable views. In the summer, the gardens stay open late every Thursday for enchanting evening visits. During these visits, 2,000 candles illuminate the paths. Pianists, saxophone quartets, and jazz groups create a magical ambience.
Exploring the Markets
A visit to France wouldn’t be complete without experiencing its vibrant markets! On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, Sarlat bursts to life. Sundays in Saint Cyprien offer an equally authentic glimpse into local culture. Come Tuesday, the charming market in Cénac-et-Saint-Julien is not to be missed. In winter, speciality truffle markets entice visitors, while summer brings the magic of nighttime food markets. Imagine dining al fresco under the stars. Choose from a variety of local delicacies. Enjoy the lively atmosphere at trestle tables in charming town squares.
Grotte de Domme
It is the largest fitted cave in the Black Perigord. The entrance is in the hall on the main square. A beautiful point of view of the Dordogne valley enhances the cliffside exit.
Lascaux Cave
The Lascaux Cave in Montignac, Dordogne, was discovered by accident in 1940. It is known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’ for its stunning Palaeolithic artwork. Closed to the public in 1963 for preservation, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
Zoological Reserve
Just 10 km from Sarlat, the Réserve Zoologique de Calviac spans a steep, wooded hillside. It is home to around 200 animals from 30 species. Many of these animals are from tropical regions. Here you will find unique animals such as squirrel monkeys and fossas, rarely seen in other zoos. A mile-long trail winds through the reserve, passing enclosures, waterfalls, and poetry plaques. The park is divided into regions. It showcases wildlife from Europe, the Mediterranean, Oceania, South America, and Madagascar. Visitors can enjoy walk-through lemur and wallaby enclosures. There are also scheduled feeding sessions.

Natasha and Tony are gracious hosts at one the loveliest and peaceful lodgings of my two week 1000+km driving tour of South Western France. La Trilogie is nestled in verdant hills overlooking the most beautiful natural and historical settings in all of France. Though it is located in a hamlet enclave that feels worlds away, it is so conveniently located to access many chateaux, stunning river drives with views of the “falaises” – the ancient cliffs, and numerous restaurants found in charming villages that won’t disappoint! All within a 10 to 20 minute drive. This is a place that you will want to return to again and again!

What a delight! The two bedroom cottage was very spacious and comfortable – actually seemed bigger than the photos depict. Our hosts couldn’t have been more welcoming and supportive and had a genuine interest in making our stay as enjoyable as possible, from recommendations and help with reservations at wonderful local restaurants, to suggestions for local sites to visit, to making sure we were comfortable when we experienced some inclement weather. We would love to return and highly recommend this unique property to anyone planning to spend time touring the gorgeous Dordogne area.

We had the most wonderful ‘family and friends ‘gathering at La Trilogie. Tony and Natasha were the most wonderful hosts and nothing was too much trouble. They told us of markets, restaurants, gardens and vineyards… all were wonderful. The houses are spacious and well equipped the grounds and gardens perfect and the salt water pool, bliss. We had children and tiny grandchildren with us and it was the perfect base to explore the wonderful villages such as Sarlat with its night market and Domme . We went canoeing and swam in the river, visited nearby chateau’s and ended our week at a wonderful Bricante taking a few French antiques home…
Altogether a fabulous week I only wish we had stayed longer ! We look forward to returning to this very special place with wonderful hosts who were so kind and helpful.

Our stay at Trilogie was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, this charming haven blends old-world elegance with soul-warming hospitality. Nataliya and Tony are the heart of this home. Their graciousness, attention to detail, and open-hearted kindness transformed our visit into something unforgettable. One evening, as we enjoyed a glass of wine on the terrace, hot air balloons float across the distant sky — the kind of moment that lingers long after you’ve returned home. The rooms are exquisite-thoughtfully designed, impeccably clean, and filled with the kind of character that photographs simply can’t capture. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and you’re gently reminded of what it means to truly relax. We came to Trilogie as travelers… and left with new friends and a piece of this village etched into our hearts.
We cannot wait to return!
