Pets, taking your pet to France

We understand that pets are part of the family, and many of our villas are proud to be pet-friendly. Traveling to France with your dog is straightforward, provided you have the correct documentation in place before you depart.

Essential Documentation

Since the UK left the EU, the requirements for pet travel have changed. You can no longer use a pet passport issued in Great Britain. Instead, you will need one of the following:

  • Animal Health Certificate (AHC): Issued by a vet in the UK within 10 days of travel.
  • EU Pet Passport: Valid if issued in an EU country (including Northern Ireland) and kept up to date with rabies vaccinations.
  • Microchip: Your pet must be microchipped before or at the same time as their rabies vaccination.
  • Rabies Vaccination: Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old and vaccinated at least 21 days before travel.

Pro Tip: Always check the latest UK Government guidelines at least 1 month before your trip.

The Return Journey: Tapeworm Treatment

Before returning to the UK, your dog must be treated for tapeworm by a vet in France. This treatment must be administered no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before your scheduled arrival time in the UK.

The vet must record this treatment in your pet’s AHC or EU Pet Passport. Failure to do this correctly may result in your pet being refused entry at the border.

Local Vets in the Monsegur & Duras Area

We have several excellent veterinary practices nearby. We recommend booking your return appointment during the first few days of your holiday to ensure a time slot that fits your travel plans.

Clinique Vétérinaire de la Bastide (Duras)

Located just on the edge of Duras, this practice is very used to assisting international visitors with return-to-UK documentation.

Address: 16 Bd Jean Moulin, 47120 Duras
Tel: +33 5 53 83 70 12

Cabinet Vétérinaire (Monsegur)

A convenient local option located within reach of Monsegur village centre.

Address: 29 Avenue Jean Paul Glanet, 33580 Monsegur
Tel: +33 5 56 61 60 03

Pet-Friendly Travel Tips

  • Le Shuttle (Eurotunnel): This is often the preferred choice for pet owners as you stay with your pet in the car during the short crossing.
  • Ferry Travel: Most ferry companies (Brittany Ferries, DFDS) have pet-friendly cabins or designated exercise areas.
  • Heat Precautions: Summer in Southwest France can be very warm. Ensure your pet has plenty of shade and water, and avoid walking them during the hottest part of the day.
