Pet Travel Documents for France
If you are travelling from Great Britain to France with a dog, cat or ferret, your pet will normally need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), unless you have another valid pet travel document accepted for entry into the EU.
An Animal Health Certificate must be issued by an official veterinarian before you travel. It is valid for entry into the EU for 10 days from the date it is issued.
Your pet will also need:
- Microchip: Your pet must be microchipped before, or at the same time as, its rabies vaccination.
- Rabies vaccination: Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination. After a first vaccination, you must wait at least 21 full days before travel, although some vaccines may require a longer period.
- Animal Health Certificate: This must be obtained from an official veterinarian before travelling if required.

Returning to Great Britain: Tapeworm Treatment
Before returning to Great Britain from France, dogs must normally be treated for tapeworm by a vet.
The treatment must be given no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before your scheduled arrival in Great Britain.
The vet must record the required treatment details in your dog’s Animal Health Certificate or other valid pet travel document, including the date and time of treatment.
Check the documentation carefully before leaving the veterinary practice, as incorrect or incomplete documentation can cause problems when returning to Great Britain.

Travelling with Your Pet
- LeShuttle: Travelling through the Channel Tunnel can be particularly convenient with a dog because your pet remains with you in your vehicle during the crossing.
- Ferries: Pet facilities vary by operator and route, with options including pet-friendly cabins, kennels and designated pet areas. Check the arrangements for your crossing before booking.
- Summer heat: South West France can be very warm during the summer. Make sure your pet has access to shade and fresh water, and avoid exercising dogs during the hottest part of the day.
