The local area and what to do in Duras, Monsegur, Bordeaux and the Dordogne, sw France

Maison Duras is conveniently situated on the edge of Duras and is an easy walk into the centre, a small historic town with cafes, bars and restaurants. It also hosts weekly farmers’ markets (Monday mornings) and weekly summer night markets (Thursday evenings) in July & August.

Near the historical bastide town of Monsegur (6km) in the region of Aquitaine within the Bordeaux wine region and on the borders of the Dordogne, Gironde and Lot et Garonne, France.

Bordeaux is a 75km drive to the west, and Bergerac is 40km to the east, St Emilion is 43km north.

Duras

Duras is the ideal base from which to explore South West France. Located in the region of Aquitaine on the 3 borders of Gironde / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne and is considered one of France’s most picturesque areas.

The region is famous for wine and wonderful gastronomy. Whether you are in St. Emilion, Pomerol, Blaye, The Médoc, Entre Deux Mers, Bourg, Graves or Sauterne the wines of the region are without doubt some of the very best in the world! Local producers nearby offer excellent quality wines at very reasonable prices through to the higher end of the market.

Perfect walking and cycling country, the rolling countryside is a pleasure to explore, with excellent roads winding their way through fields and vineyards.

Both Duras and nearby Monsegur are ancient Bastide towns set around a market square which hosts weekly markets and a weekly night market during the peak summer season. There is a good selection of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and excellent boulangeries in both towns, our favourite being La Choco-Latine in Monsegur who were runners up in the French TV show “La Meilleure Boulangerie de France” in 2019.

We love the volunteer-run Cinema Eden in Monsegur, they show some international films in their original language version (VO) with French subtitles.

The market squares host a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Monsegur hosts the famous 24 Heures de Swing each year at the beginning of July.

Wine and Gastronomy

The Bordeaux wine region has 21 appellations. Visit some of the many local Chateau that offers free tastings and tours while you choose a bottle or two.

Not to be missed is the world-famous Saint Emilion 43km. A designated World Heritage site and is truly stunning. Explore characteristic narrow lanes lined with wine merchants, cafes, restaurants and interesting independent shops. A guided tour of the monolithic church is highly recommended.

Wine tours, a picnic in a vineyard and cheese and wine pairing evenings are available through local couple Sylvie and Pascal who run Loving Aquitaine.

Bordeaux

This designated world heritage site is a must for all visitors. This cosmopolitan city offers a diverse range of attractions. The Golden Triangle has a fabulous range of shops for those shopaholics.
A rich variety of architecture forms the backdrop for the street cafes, restaurants, bars and not forgetting the superb Grand Theatre.

Dordogne

The Dordogne is just one of the many places to visit for day trips. Anything from canoeing or boat trips on the Dordogne river at Bergerac to exploring the wonderful and pretty ancient villages.

Splendid holiday home.

We have enjoyed many happy stays in this charming and well maintained house.
It is in an ideal quiet location whilst close enough to walk into Duras to shop or dine, whether in a restaurant or in the square at the atmospheric evening street markets where live music can be enjoyed as a bonus.
The chateau is a great place to visit and this July we were also able to attend an inclusive falconry display whilst revisiting to see the restoration progress.
Quiet drives through the surrounding countryside to neighbouring villages is always enjoyable not to mention those essential vineyard visits!
For hot, lazy days there is an excellent furnished poolside space where refreshing cooling plunges can also be enjoyed.
There is a stylish covered seating area for shading retreats in the area near to the spacious outdoor dining table where we have enjoyed many barbeques.
Thank you.

My group and i absolutely loved our stay here! the house is cozy, well kept, and couldn’t be more convenient to stay in Duras. you’re a very short, easy walk to the larger supermarket in one direction, and an even shorter walk into town, where there are cafes, shops, and markets to enjoy, plus the castle! the outdoor space was lovely and we had everything we needed for our stay at our fingertips. highly recommend a stay here and we do hope to return.

We absolutely loved our stay. the house is beautiful and couldn’t have been more convenient for us. thank you!

Charming house, well equipped and perfectly located in the town of Duras. We go on foot to get our bread, dine in the village square or go to the market. The swimming pool is secure. There is a shaded garden for the hot hours. The bedrooms are air conditioned and the bedding is of good quality. It is therefore a somewhat cramped village house with a small swimming pool. Ideal for 3 couples.

Nous avons passé un excellent séjour à Duras. La maison est très agréable et confortable. La commune de Duras très charmante. Il y a tous les commerces nécessaires à proximité et à pied de la maison. Et il y a beaucoup de chose à voir dans cette belle région.

We had a great stay in Duras. The house is very nice and comfortable. The very charming town of Duras. There are all the necessary shops nearby and within walking distance of the house. And there is a lot to see in this beautiful region.

…house is perfect! Extremely well placed, Tracy was charming and communicative. The house has 4 bedrooms and as many bathrooms and toilets so perfect for a large troop. And the kitchen is very well equipped.
We will return to Tracy’s with great pleasure!
Go there, you will have a great time.

We had a wonderful stay in Duras
The house was very nice, the kitchen was generously equipped. Also we liked the large beautiful garden with many seating possibilities and the beach chairs by the pool.
Unfortunately, the weather was not so sunny, so we could use the pool only once. Me and my friends liked everything very well and we felt comfortable.

Greetings from Regensburg, Germany.  Richard O and friends. April 2017

Perfect

Was blown away by Maison Duras – the property looks even better than in the pictures – and the pictures look great! Welcome pack on arrival was a nice touch – and the wine went down very nicely after a long days drive.
Duras is a great town and a great base to explore the surrounding area and towns.

Home from home in Beautiful Duras
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The thing about this villa is that it really felt as though the owners had lent us their home for our holiday. Somehow it felt lived in: It was equipped with everything you could possibly need and there were so many examples of the sorts of things that often the cleaners take home as one of their ‘perks’:
There were condiments in the kitchen, soap in the bathrooms and even a bottle of local wine in the fridge ! It all served to make us feel immediately at ease and this is the first holiday I can remember where I genuinely did not want to leave.

The bed linen was very new and of good quality and in general it was obvious that a lot of effort (and money) had gone in to making the house as comfortable as possible. Broadband was speedy too if you just can’t sleep away from social media (or Skype!).

The pool area was well equipped with sun loungers and cushions and we manage to beat the Germans to the loungers every day ! The pool itself is not huge; I mean you’re not going to train for the olympics but for that refreshing dip when the hot sun gets a bit too much, it’s ideal. The pool maintenance man did curse the trees at the side of the pool though and as soon as the welcome breeze got up a little, the pool was the only place the leaves were going to go.

The house is situated close to a Patisserie (and a bank!) with a couple of excellent restaurants in the quaint little village. If you’re looking for nightlife, then this is not for you but if you’re looking for charm, tradition and warm friendly locals (and a fair few brits !), then look no further. We found the local restaurants to be of excellent quality. In general eating out isn’t particularly cheap (what is?), but that is soon forgotten looking out over the countryside from the Terrasse restaurant opposite the charming chateau.

Loved it!

The house has everything for a lovely holiday. The location is just right to enjoy all that is going on in the town but is still quiet. We were spoilt with gorgeous sunshine and enjoyed having a pool to keep us cool.

Had a lovely stay at Maison Duras – restful, with interest provided by visits to local markets. Enjoyed the pool and local wine. My family have just returned from 2 wonderful weeks staying at Maison Duras. The house is spacious, clean and extremely well equipped. The garden and BBQ area are great for sitting out during the day and evening and our little boy loved the pool. The pool was cleaned around 5 times during our stay.  Only 45 minutes from Bergerac Airport, it made the perfect base for us to explore the local area. We would highly recommend the beach and lake at Lanquais about 50 mins drive away along with some of the beautiful places along the Dordogne such as Beynac. Thank you so much, we cannot recommend this house and organisation highly enough.

We had a wonderful holiday and really enjoyed the house and the situation was fantastic. I have recommended you to some friends.
