The local area, Bordeaux and the Dordogne, France

Situated near the bastide town of Duras in the region of Aquitaine within the Bordeaux wine region and on the border of the Dordogne, Gironde and Lot et Garonne, France.

Bordeaux is approximately just over an hour drive to the west and Bergerac is 45 minutes to the east, St Emilion 30 minutes north.

This is the ideal base from which to explore South West France and is considered to be one of the most picturesque areas of France.

The gently rolling countryside is a pleasure to explore, with excellent roads winding their way through fields and vineyards. Perfect cycling country!

Duras is ancient Bastide town set around a market square which is host to weekly markets and also a weekly night market during the peak summer season. There is a good selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants as well as a pharmacy, bank, tennis courts and the Chateau de Duras which is well worth a visit.
There is also a cinema in nearby Monsegur, which does show some international films in their original language version (VO).

The market squares of the surrounding towns and villages are also hosts the many festivals and events throughout the year.

Wine and Gastronomy
The Bordeaux wine region has 21 appellations. Visit some of the many local Caves and Chateau who offer free tastings and tours while you choose a bottle or two.

Not to be missed is the world famous St Emilion, just a short drive away. A designated world heritage site and is truly stunning. Explore characteristic narrow lanes lined with wine merchants, cafes, restaurants and interesting independent shops. A guided tour of the monolithic church is highly recommended.

Follow Rick Steins French Odyssey (Bordeaux to Bazas) trail across this region and encounter some of the best culinary experiences France has to offer.

Bordeaux
This designated world heritage site is a must for all visitors. This cosmopolitan city offers a diverse range of attractions. The golden triangle has a fabulous range of shops for those shopaholics.
A rich variety of architecture forms the backdrop for the street cafe’s, restaurants, bars and not forgetting the superb Grand Theatre.

Dordogne
The Dordogne is just one of the many places to visit for day trips. Anything from Canoeing or boat trips on the Dordogne river to exploring ancient villages.

Markets
Most villages and towns hold weekly markets full of fresh and interesting local produce. An ideal place to pick up your holiday mementoes and gifts. Both Monsegur and Duras also have night markets during the summer where you can eat and have a drink as well as browse the many stalls.

Activities

Cycling
The countryside around our properties is perfect for cycling, whether it’s just a gentle ride around to explore or, if you are a keen cyclist, a long training ride on fantastic stretches of road to get the blood pumping whilst taking in the fantastic views.

Cycle hire is available to your door – visit www.themountainbikehirecompany.co.uk for details.

Public tennis courts
Good quality courts are located in Monsegur, Duras & St Sernin de Duras and are usually booked via the local tourist information office.

Canoeing and kayaking
Canoe hire is available on the rivers. The river Dropt winds through the valley with a slow flow on it, whilst the large river Garonne (20 minutes away) has a faster pace.
The Dordogne river is an hour away which has a faster pace but has plenty of canoe hire opportunities and literally just go with the flow and be picked up further down stream. Of course the easiest way is a boat trip and let some one else do the work.

Beaches
Approximately 20 miles away is the popular Lac de Gurson which has a manmade beach and good selection of on-site facilities including children’s playground, picnic area’s and cafe’s.  A popular day out for families.

The Atlantic coast, with over 150 miles of golden sandy beaches is less than one and a half hours drive away. Great fun for all the family, simply relax and soak up the sun or try your hand at surfing. Alternatively there are also fresh water lakes with a beach and facilities. The nearest is at Blasimon (about 30 minutes drive) and is very popular with families.

Golf
There are many pay and play golf courses within the area, the best being the beautiful Chateau Des Vigiers Golf and Country Club. The chateau dates back to 1597 and is set in 450 acres of stunning countryside. Facilities also include a fine restaurant and relaxing beauty spa.

Zoo & Water park
Zoo de Bordeaux Pessac is approximately an hour drive
Aquapark water park is approximately 30 minutes drive located near Bergerac

“We had a wonderful stay in Les Volets Rouge. The accommodation was beautiful and the pool was fabulous. We had everything we needed and more. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend the accommodation or Holiday Cottages and Villas, who were extremely efficient and helpful. I will certainly be booking with them again.”
The Tookes, July 2016

“Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We had a lovely relaxing holiday. The kids loved the pool and we could barely tear them away for dinner; though it wasn’t more than 2 minutes walk to the village restaurant which we went to 3 times it was so good! The surrounding area is truly stunning. Best wishes”

The Ward family, August 2015

“As a family we are very grateful for your professional and ‘extra mile’ support in enabling us to take this holiday. As you know my wife Gemma had just had an operation and we didn’t think it would be possible to go away. Your speedy and ‘can do’ approach accompanied by a brilliant accommodation solution really made our summer.

The house itself, Les Volets Rouge, was in essence perfect for myself, my wife and our two children’s holiday this summer. Being situated within the village of St Sernin meant we could get to know a few neighbours, have easy access to a shop with the essentials (1 minute walk), enjoy the village restaurant and have a very short (less than 10 min) drive to the nearby Duras when we needed a supermarket, night market and a beautiful Bastide town to explore.
The house is absolutely full of character both in terms of being a very well restored old, thick stone walled French cottage whilst also being brought to life by the enchanting decor by the English owner. The pool was a brilliant size with still ample sitting, eating and barbecuing space around it. Practically speaking the two bedrooms were an ideal size for our family and the house was well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

We would very happily return to this house for another holiday – hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks to the owner Wendy as well as Tracy from Holiday Cottages and Villas for enabling a brilliant family holiday. Warm regards,”
Adam, Gemma, Hope and Thea Bonner, August 2015

‘Lovely house, well equipped, clean and a fabulous swimming pool with a shaded area just by the house, lots of interesting details and artefacts like tiny fairy stained glass windows in the one bedroom, well furnished .The village has a nice shop and there is loads to do in the surrounding area including brilliant French markets. We really enjoyed our stay’.
Salie H, Devon. September 2014

‘This is an immensely pretty and unique cottage, bedecked with original touches and décor. We had such a resting break in this quiet village only a stone’s throw from the beautiful town of Duras. Our stay was so relaxing: the cottage is amply equipped for self-catering with comfortable beds, a private pool with pool side barbecue/fire and all the facilities we needed. The local tabac , only a stroll from the cottage, proffered fresh croissants and bread each morning, although the local Carrefour supermarket is only a short drive away. The night markets held in surrounding scenic villages are fabulous and a lively treat and can be a great alternative to eating formally in the many restaurants dotted around the area. We will most definitely be back to stay again….!’
Stephanie Cartwright, August 2014

‘We had a marvelous time! Only an hour from Bordeaux and surrounded by gorgeous countryside and charming little towns with wonderful markets, you couldn’t ask for a better location. The house itself is comfortable and cozy and the pool surrounded by an English garden was the place we spent most of our evenings. We would go back in a heartbeat, and intend to do so. Everything about our stay was positive and I can recommend this home and location without reservation.’
