Chateau La Maronne is a luxurious and spacious 4 bedroom holiday home with private pool near Sauveterre de Guyenne and just 30 mins from St Emilion in south west France. 

Situated between Bordeaux, Bergerac and Saint Emilion near the border of the Dordogne in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region of France, making it a fabulous location to explore the this beautiful area.

Only 9km from the ancient Bastide town of Sauveterre de Guyenne which was founded in 1281 by King Edward I of England.  The central market square is surrounded by stone houses and arcades with a small selection of shops, a bar and a restaurant. Within a short drive of other ancient Bastide towns of Monsegur (Gironde) and Duras (Lot et Garonne) which have boulangerie’s, cafe bars, restaurants, banks, shops and supermarkets as well as weekly farmers markets and night market in the peak summer months.

A former vineyard chateau surrounded by 60 hectares of vines, built in the Napoleon III style in the 17th century, typical of the Entre-deux-Mers, with the original foundations being that of a monastery. Set over three floors the whole house is tastefully decorated and furnished providing luxurious accommodation.

The elegant living room is simply decorated and showcases interesting artefacts sourced personally by the owners. Furnished with Italian designer sofa’s set around the feature brick and stone fireplace; with French doors opening onto the gravelled terrace and garden beyond. The adjoining dining room also has a beautiful stone fireplace and a table and chairs that can accommodate 10 people with ease.

The 12m x 5m private swimming pool (with alarm) has walk-in steps that span the width of the pool at one end and a sun deck, loungers and parasols.


Set on a hectare of land which merges into the surrounding vineyards, providing beautiful rural views and walks and a home to wildlife including deer, owls and hares.

Lake and Beach

A fresh water lake with sandy beach at Blasimon is just 8km away. Popular with families the lake has shallow entry points as well as water activities which is great for young children.  There are daily activities during July & August including volleyball, beach tennis, beach soccer and canoeing. There is also a snack bar and public WC.

The local area and what to do, Sauveterre de Guyenne / Monsegur / Duras, Bordeaux and the Dordogne, France

Chateau La Maronne is situated near the towns of Sauveterre de Guyenne (9km), Castillon la Bataille (16km), Monsegur (17km), Duras (28km), Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (29km) and Saint Émilion (28km) in the region of Aquitaine within the Bordeaux wine region and on the borders of the Dordogne, Gironde and Lot et Garonne, France.

Bordeaux city centre is a 54km drive to the west and Bergerac is also 54km to the east, Saint Émilion just 28km north.

This is the ideal base from which to explore South West France. Located in the region of Aquitaine on the 3 borders of Gironde / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne and is considered to be one of the most picturesque areas of France.

This region is famous for its wines and wonderful gastronomy. Whether you are in St. Emilion, Pomerol, Blaye, The Médoc, Entre Deux Mers, Bourg, Graves or Sauterne the wines of the region are without doubt some of the very best in the world!
There are local producers near this holiday home that offer very good quality produce at a very reasonable price.

The gently rolling countryside is a pleasure to explore, with excellent roads winding their way through fields and vineyards. Perfect cycling country!

Monsegur and Duras are ancient Bastide towns set around a market square which are host to weekly markets and also a weekly night market during the peak summer season. There is a good selection of shops including cafés with refreshments and a pizzeria which host’s weekly live music.
There is also Cinema Eden in Monsegur, which does show international films in their original language version (VO), a selection of English speaking films with French subtitles.

The market squares are also hosts the many festivals and events throughout the year.

Wine and Gastronomy

So many Vineyards and wine tastings in the area.
The Bordeaux wine region has 21 appellations. Visit some of the many local Caves and Chateau who offer free tastings and tours while you choose a bottle or two.

Not to be missed is the world famous St Emilion. A designated world heritage site and is truly stunning. Explore characteristic narrow lanes lined with wine merchants, cafes, restaurants and interesting independent shops. A guided tour of the monolithic church is highly recommended.

This designated world heritage site is a must for all visitors. This cosmopolitan city offers a diverse range of attractions. The golden triangle has a fabulous range of shops for those shopaholics.
A rich variety of architecture forms the backdrop for the street cafe’s, restaurants, bars and not forgetting the superb Grand Theatre.


The Dordogne is just one of the many places to visit for day trips. Anything from Canoeing or boat trips on the Dordogne river at Bergerac to exploring ancient villages.

Visit Europe’s largest sand dune 134km, the Dune du Pilat where both the climb and the views will take your breath away! Reward yourself by feasting on fresh seafood around the Bay of Arcachon or take the ferry to Cap Ferret and feel the sand between your toes whilst you enjoy oysters and chilled white wine.

Cycling, Bike hire

The French countryside around this property is perfect for a fietsvakanties Frankrijk (popular here with the Dutch and they have a word for it) or cycling holiday in France, whether it’s just a gentle ride around to explore or, if you are a keen cyclist, a long training ride on fantastic stretches of road to get the blood pumping whilst taking in the fantastic views.

Yes we believe chocolate is also an activity… we often have to visit and make sure the quality is up to standard so we can continue to recommend this.
Maison Guinguet gourmet chocolate, they have a very nice shop to visit next to their artisan factory. 2km from Duras.

Public tennis courts

Good quality courts are located in Monsegur and Duras and are usually booked via the local tourist information office.

Canoeing and kayaking

Canoe hire is available on the rivers. The river Dropt winds through the valley with a slow flow on it.
The Dordogne river at Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (29km) has a faster pace but has plenty of canoe hire opportunities and literally just go with the flow and be picked up further down stream. Of course the easiest way is a boat trip and let some one else do the work.

Most villages and towns hold weekly markets full of fresh and interesting local produce. An ideal place to pick up your holiday mementoes and gifts.
Both Monsegur and Duras also have night markets during the summer where you can eat and have a drink as well as browse the many stalls.

Duras: Every Monday from 8.30 to 14:00 (closes at 12:00 from September to June). Nice market, excellent Organic veg’s & fruit producer. Excellent organic goat cheese producers too… Foie gras, Magrets and many stands of food/non food.
Allemans du Dropt (34km): Every Sunday morning.
Sainte Foy La Grande (29km): Every Saturday from 8.30 to 12:00. Quite big market with excellent producers.
Monségur: Every Friday from 8.30 to 12. Nice small market with good fish stall and a good butcher.
Issigeac (65km): Every Sunday morning.
Eymet (44km): Every Thursday morning.

Night markets

From 1st of July till End of August, very successful, where you can eat and dance, with many craft and food stands. Go early if you want to park close to the village.
Duras (23km) Night market: Every Thursday evening till end of August.
Lévignac de Guyenne (29km) Night market: Every Friday evening till end of August.
Monsegur (18km) Night market. Every Wednesday evening till mid of September.
